Immunity Smoothie

When work schedules get hectic and holiday to dos pile up, the last thing any of us needs is to get sick. I'm increasing my of vitamin C intake and attempt to get all my nutrients in one morning smoothie, so I'm good to go from the start of the day. 

I was in yoga class yesterday, knowing my body needed a calming workout. We spent several minutes at a time in each pose, sitting in the discomfort. I could feel myself getting angry with the pain -- have you ever been there? The instructor said something that really resonated with me. She said, "Try to find and embrace the stillness even though you may be experiencing intense feelings inside." As I walked Beans today in the woods, I realized that I was grappling with something similar -- finding the stillness even though everything feels like chaos. Sometimes it's just a matter of holding on and grounding in what is without resisting or running away from the uncomfortable feelings. I don't have it all figured out, but I'm definitely working through some troubling feelings and emotions this month while simultaneously weathering a hectic schedule.  

This recipe is not only grounding, but full of anti-inflammatory, infection-fighting benefits. I love the warm spices and natural sweetness from the sweet potato. Let's go through it:

Sweet Potato: High in Vitamin C & A, B6, Potassium and Fiber. Essentially, sweet potatoes fight inflammation in the body, help your skin and the purple ones have been linked to healing cognitive degeneration. WHAT.

Cinnamon: Anti-inflammatory, improves cognitive function, protects against virus and infection.

Maca: Contains calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. Recommended to help calm stress hormones and reduce adrenal fatigue. Huge for this time of year!

Turmeric: Anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, linked to cancer prevention, weight management, depression prevention + more. 


Immunity Smoothie (GF, V)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cooked and cooled sweet potato, skin removed 
  • 1/3 frozen banana (if not frozen, just add a few ice cubes to the blender)
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • 1/4 tsp each ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 Tbsp flaxseed meal
  • 1 cup spinach
  • (optional) 1 tsp maca powder
  • 1-1.5 cups almond milk
  • (optional) 1 scoop of vital proteins beauty greens

Instructions

  1. Bake the sweet potato in the oven and allow to cool. To do this, split it in half and add a little coconut oil to coat. Put in a 400 degree oven for about a half hour or until softened. Let cool!

  2. Add all the ingredients into the blend and blend away until smooth. Add more ice if you want it thicker!
  3. Taste and adjust seasonings, as you want/need.
