Five Ways to Radiate Beauty

“The most powerful woman is one who believes she is beautiful.”

-Hilary Rushford

I’ve noticed a trend lately. Women who want to be skinnier. Women who want to surgically change parts of their body because their boyfriend makes under the table comments about their body. Women who want to know how to reduce their wrinkles, hide their unique features, debloat, get fit, find confidence, find courage to leave their boyfriend because they deserve better (but can’t because they’re scared to be alone).

Essentially, I’m seeing a LOT of insecurity. And it’s coming from insanely BEAUTIFUL, fit, sexy women with the most alluring personalities. And look -- I’m not judging. I’ve been there -- this week. I’ve been insecure, sad, lonely, stuck in a dead relationship with someone who didn’t appreciate me, sad about the direction of my life, insecure about my small boobs, and yes, ashamed of my body. I completely understand. And if you want surgery because it’s YOUR choice for YOU, then absolutely do it if you've done the research! I mean, let’s be real: if someone would pay for me to get a smidge of botox on my “11”, I’d strongly consider. So I’m not naysaying the act of doing any of these things. It’s human and natural to want to improve our looks, make ourselves beautiful, adorn ourselves. What I don’t love is seeing women influenced by their boyfriends, magazines, instagram (or other people) to do these things.

Even though makeup, surgeries, and cosmetic procedures *can* in theory improve self esteem (and I know first hand that this has been the case for some of my friends), I am here to say that real, long term beauty starts in your mind. It’s cliche, but true. And most cliches are cliches because they’re the most true truths….You feel me?

"I think the best role models for women are people who are fruitfully and confidently themselves, who bring light into the world."

—Meryl Streep

Here are FIVE ways we can all start internalizing and radiating our own beauty starting on the INSIDE FIRST:

1. Steer your Belief.

Pure, unadultered belief yields power to be that woman you needed as a little girl. Choose to believe a thought with your whole heart and it becomes who you are. This can be positively life-changing. It can also be life-destroying if you choose to believe the wrong thoughts. Choose your beliefs wisely. Believe in the beauty that is there.

2. Affirmation.

I read a Beyoncé quote and the sentiment was that instead of telling bossy little girls that they’re bossy, wouldn’t it be nice if we said, “you’re such a natural-born leader!” This shift from a negative to a positive is EVERYTHING. Celebrate and affirm your strengths. Choose to think and say words about yourself (and others, for that matter) that project the person that you want to be (and already are).

3. Community.

Humans should uplift humans. Women should uplift and empower other women. If you’re feeling insecure about something and you speak it out loud, someone in your tribe can then hold you accountable and be like, “GIRL YOU CRAZY. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. TAKE THAT OPINION ABOUT YOURSELF OUT OF YOUR VOCAB.” Beep boop beep -- it’s gone.

"I am a woman with thoughts and questions and shit to say. I say if I'm beautiful. I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story–I will."

—Amy Schumer

4. Education.

Educate yourself on the history of women and humankind. Become aware of what society is projecting onto you and then decide what you’ll go along with and what you’ll deviate from. Wanting to fit into society is just fine. Wanting to be beautiful by our society’s standards is, as well. But I just want to encourage you to understand the ‘why’ behind your impulses first.

5. Be Gentle with Yourself.

I heard Gloria Steinem speak this month and she said something very profound. She said that women don't so much have the problem of treating others as they would want to be treated. Instead, women need to treat themselves as they would treat others. Be kind to yourself. Shower yourself with love. Allow yourself to feel unashamedly beautiful. This is truly what you deserve. <3

BONUS: Actually get ready in the morning.

This one is actually an external tip (just for fun). I find that when I get ready and make myself look presentable that I actually feel the part. Fake it til ya make it. Unless it’s your best look (which for some it is), don’t walk around in your sweats all the livelong day. Put on a flouncy dress! Play in the sun! Sip a cute little rose drink! Smile that beautiful smile. And know how beautiful and enough you already are. :D

We could go on and on here, but I felt strongly about putting this out into the ether so there ya go. What makes you feel beautiful? What do you do to radiate beauty when you don't feel on your best game? Tell me your tips!
